On The Move The only trick here is that PBB is callable at the end of 2018 (if it gets called, it would be at $25 per share), though with interest rates rising, there’s nothing that says Prospect will actually call the bond. Still, to be safe, you probably want to try to try to get in no higher than $26 per share (and preferably as close to $25 as possible), just in case.

I have a mortgage which is lower than any rent I’ve ever paid. I have started paying back my outrageous student loans and I have about 5k in credit card debt, in which 1/2 isn’t being charged interest currently. I have a teacher’s retirement fund (I’m only 2 years in) and I put $150 pre-tax toward a Valic account. Before food (groceries or eating out) and gas, I have approximately 1.5% of my salary remaining. Until my salary miraculously changes, is there something else I should be considering to lower my debt or help create a savings? I’ve been thinking about a second job (which I’ve worked before) but I just didn’t know if its a wise return on investing my time. What I can do doesn’t really yield great gains working it 1 day a week (2 if I work 7 days a week which is only possible during summer do to grad school). I’m just wondering if I’m missing something…other than a US living wage.

I haven’t done much shopping. Can you give me a general idea of how the interest rates increase in relation to how long I hold the CD? I also would like to add to my son’s college fund for my granddaughter, which would mean a much longer-term investment. Which investment do you recommend? Finally, my 401(k) is doing pretty well and I wonder if I should just put the $30k in it. I’m 63 and plan to retire at 67.
NAVISTAR INTL CORP P/P 144A 06.6250 11/01/2025 0.26% I have many books that explain in great detail the ins and outs of different investment choices, such as mutual funds, treasury inflation protected securities (TIPS), ETFs, municipal bonds, etc. However there are not many books with sound strategies for when to buy each type of investment. Also, most investment books that exist as of this writing (2011), still cling to the notion that most people should invest in mutual fund stocks and bonds. However, a decade of experience now shows that may not have been the smartest move over the last ten years, and ten years is a long time. Stocks don't always go up, even in the long run. Most financial book authors who wrote books before 2008 didn't realize that could happen. This time it really is different. Inflation is running 3%, stocks are scary and most fixed rate investments aren't even keeping up with inflation.

Unfortunately, as your retirement age nears and your investment horizon shortens, you lose the security that good company management results in an increased stock price. Even if you need to reduce your investment target, it’s wise to choose more secure investments, curbing volatility by exchanging potential for certainty. While a 30-year-old can invest aggressively, having 35 years or more to make up for mistakes, a 60-year-old doesn’t have that luxury since time isn’t on his or her side.
