On August 17, 2012, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a complaint against defendants Paul Burks and Zeek Rewards, based in North Carolina. Paul Burks ran Zeek Rewards, an investment opportunity that promised investors returns by sharing in the profits of Zeekler, a penny auction website. Money invested in Zeek Rewards earned returns of 1.5% per day. Investors were encouraged to let their gains compound and to recruit new members into a "forced matrix" to increase their returns. The SEC contends that this forced matrix payout scheme constitutes a pyramid scheme.[7] New investors had to pay a monthly subscription fee of between US$10 and US$99, and provide an initial investment of up to $10,000. The higher the initial investment, the higher the returns appeared. The SEC stated that the Zeekler website brought in only about 1% of the Zeek Rewards company's purported income and that the vast majority of disbursed funds were paid from new investments. The SEC alleges that Zeek Rewards is a $600 million Ponzi scheme affecting 1 million investors, which would be one of the largest Ponzi schemes in history by number of affected investors. A court-appointed receiver estimated that the $600 million amount could be "on the low end" and that the number of investors could be as many as 2 million.[8][9] Paul Burks paid $4 million to the SEC and agreed to cooperate with its investigation.[10][11][12] In February 2017 Burks was sentenced to 14 years and 8 months' imprisonment for his part in Zeek Rewards.[13] Peer-to-peer lending websites allow investors to broaden their investment portfolio by spreading out the investments and reducing their risk. These websites work as tools to connect investors to qualified consumers in need of a loan and allow investors to become the bank, providing a small percentage of multiple borrowers’ loans. Investors purchase notes and receive a monthly income in the form of loan repayment and interest. In the end, this can easily be a win-win for everyone involved. Most successful investors are what can be called hedged risk-takers. That means that they will take risks periodically if they can afford to, but they never take more risks than are considered necessary to accomplish their goals. Although there are investments that historically have reaped more financial rewards than financial disasters, many more are nothing more than bottomless pits that continually feed the never-quenched thirst of speculation. They seem to always promise great returns but seldom seem to deliver. But that's about as good as it gets, unless you delve into the murky world of high-yield private secured loans, promissory notes and similar investments that are sometimes touted as a way to get a safe but enticing return in today's low-interest rate, low-return world. But I don't recommend using such vehicles as way to earn extra yield for the money you would otherwise keep in savings accounts, CDs or money-market accounts, as they just don't provide the same level of security. Short Ideas Whether you're just getting started investing...or already retired and living off your investment income... There is a downside to traditional bond funds. They can experience capital losses as funds sell some bonds to buy new ones. If interest rates have risen, the fund incurs a loss on the sale of bonds. Consider your best debt options Dividend Yield: 17% Though Ponzi schemes have existed since at least the early 1900s, the rise of digital payment systems has made it much easier for operators of such websites to accept payments from people worldwide.[3] Electronic money systems are generally accepted by HYIP operators because they are more accessible to operators than traditional merchant accounts. Some HYIP operators opened their own digital currency companies that eventually folded; these companies include Standard Reserve, OSGold, INTGold, EvoCash, and V-Money. StormPay started in the same way in 2002, but it remained in business even after the HYIP that it was created to serve was shut down by the State of Tennessee.[4] Tecademics CVY Dividend Yield: 5% I have been investing and stock trading for ten years and this book just reconfirmed for me what I have learned about portfolio construction. At heart I am a trend trader making my money by following trends but with the market and economy in such a slump and my CDs making almost no interest I have had to look to income investing for a way to keep making money. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning how to create a portfolio that produces a steady income with reduced risks. It is an easy read, informative, and excellent. This compares favorably with most of the other alternatives, including high-yield, investment-grade and emerging-market debt, and a basket of U.S. common dividend-paying stocks. I agree with Smokey as to the risk of her picks. I subscribed to her newsletter for a year, but did not renew it, nor would I subscribe again. I bought several of her suggested picks and in general they had poor overall performance, as prices on average went down. She seems to pay little attention to price, and does not have a problem with recommending things that have already had a dramatic run-up in price. Especially in the fixed-income arena, this seems to increase the risk, as prices tend to View honest pricing and reviews in one place.
