Even better, you can transfer your high interest balance to a 0% APR balance transfer card to speed up the process. There’s a lot to be said for investment income, especially delivered via companies that are fully capable of sustaining that income for many years ahead. In sagging stock markets, some portion of an investor’s portfolio needs to produce returns now, not later. With plenty of dividend income, the wait for a market recovery shouldn’t seem quite so painful. Peer inside the global telecommunications sector and you will find many generous dividend payers also boasting financial strength far in excess of overall market averages.
► Best CD Rates – Arizona Many investors appear to be assuming that the equity volatility of early February and mid-March was largely technical. It was shallow, short-lived and lacked major contagion into other asset classes, prompting an apparent willingness to “buy the dips.”

ROI: 57 % I have been investing and stock trading for ten years and this book just reconfirmed for me what I have learned about portfolio construction. At heart I am a trend trader making my money by following trends but with the market and economy in such a slump and my CDs making almost no interest I have had to look to income investing for a way to keep making money. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning how to create a portfolio that produces a steady income with reduced risks. It is an easy read, informative, and excellent.
When you'll receive each dividend payment! If access to capital markets becomes restricted or more expensive (e.g. rising interest rates; a slumping share price), such as what happened during the financial crisis, these types of high dividend stocks can suddenly be very vulnerable.
2 comments Again, keep an eye out for those expense ratios. Vanguard’s popular S&P 500 ETF, for example, charges just 0.04%, meaning that you pay $4 for every $10,000 invested. But it’s not unusual for actively managed funds to charge 1% — which can eat up thousands of extra dollars of your money over time. You can use an expense ratio calculator to see the difference.

I’ve been doing some research and came across this site. I like that you provided many options to ponder. I’m going to be receiving an inheritance from my Grandfather soon. I’m not sure exactly how much it will be, but his house is being sold and split four ways, so I’m guessing somewhere around 40k give or take. I’m 34 years old, no debt (besides mortgage), wife and three children (10,10, 5), 335k on my mortgage, 55k in TSP that I contribute about 5k a year to. I’m also looking at retiring from the Marines in about five years, with a pension of around 30k a year with 100% medical and dental. I have around 7k in emergency savings and plan on using some of the inheritence to top that off at 15-20k. I also plan on talking to a financial counselor for some advice on what to do with the bulk of the money, but I’m curious about your thoughts. Thanks!

Someone in the highest tax bracket would have to bring in about 7% of yield before taxes to score NUV’s 4% in after-tax yield.

Subscribe Hi David – My feeling is that if you think you will need the money within two or three years, then safety of principal is the real objective. I wouldn’t go with anything more risky than Treasury bills, CDs or money market funds. Yes, you can do better with stocks, but you can also lose money. Lending Club is a good mix into a safe portfolio, but it isn’t completely risk free either, so you have to weigh out the rewards vs. the risk.

And finally, don’t go overboard. While short-term bond funds make a lot of sense, don’t upend your entire strategy. In fact, there’s a strong argument for sticking with your so-called core bond funds even if they include longer-dated debt. “A core bond fund can still play a very constructive role in a diversified portfolio,” says Toms. “Those bonds do a good job of offsetting equity volatility.”
